What is Geriatric Medicine?
Geriatric medicine is the specialty of healthcare that focuses on the specific needs and health concerns of elderly patients. While the age of the patient is considered, it is not the specific measure required for a patient’s healthcare status. As a patient ages, the likelihood of their healthcare needs changing and becoming more complicated increases.
With Dr. Sareen’s medical training, experience, and knowledge of his patient’s medical records, he understands that the needs of older patients, communication with them and their families, and decisions that need to be considered or made can be difficult. Instead of having to find and consult another geriatric physician, however, the patient already has the benefits of seeing a specialist without the hassle of going having to go to another doctor.
With the patient’s needs and abilities being paramount to their care, communication has to be strong as well. Taking into account the physicality of the person, their emotional state, and their mental faculties, the desires of the patient, the concerns of the family, and the recommendations of the doctor will help create realistic short- and long-term plans. Geriatric medicine promotes living a healthy and fulfilling life with reasonable objectives to meet those goals.
With the decline of physical ability, the risk of falls, bruises, and other physical injuries can escalate a minor issue to a life-threatening one. Mental acuity can decline as well and become a major problem for a patient who may live alone or with a similarly aged spouse.
A qualified physician’s assessment of the skills and abilities of a patient can help determine if they have the adequate life skills to live on their own. Skills, such as maintaining their home, proper diet, proper hygiene, and any other pertinent needs, are assessed and reviewed to see if any changes need to be considered for the benefit of the patient. With Dr. Sareen’s input and collaboration, the patient in question can receive the most beneficial care and support.
